Grasses and Wild Flower Walk

Grasses and Flowers Walk - Wednesday June 28th

18 of us had a lovely summer evening walk, looking at around 50 species of grasses and flowers. Richard Jefferson is such a mine of information, telling us the difference between grasses, rushes, and sedges and that there were 150 species of grass. We found some species that are only found in ancient woodland such as wood spurge (this is about the furthest north this is found), dogs mercury and wood millet. Of course we had the common species such as honeysuckle, stitchwort, rose bay willowherb, white clover and herb robert, but we also saw some more uncommon plants like wood vetch, and those of specific habitat such as float grass, which lives in damp places. All in all a very informative evening, with everyone learning something.
