Friends build new Bat boxes

Timber for new bat boxes was kindly donated by Mr Ronnie Branch of Branch Bros. of Bourne and Market Deeping. A small but efficient production teams of Friends and Willie McLaughlin of the Forestry commission assembled in the FC shed. Soon many bat boxes were under construction. Bourne Woods hosts about 7 out of the 17 bat species found in the British Isles. Of special interest is the rare Leisler bat which is to be found in Lincolnshire but only in Bourne Wood. Other bat residents in our wood include the pipistrelle, the daubenton's whiskered, the brown long-eared and the noctule.

The new bat boxes will be placed in the trees during the next few weeks. Often three boxes are placed around the trunk of one tree in order that the bats can move around to avoid full sun.
