The Friends of Bourne Woods are a group of people who are interested in and are involved with helping to promote and look after Bourne Woods.

The Friends plan to organise projects and activities in the Woods, as well as well as look after them. Members can join in as little or as much as they like - every little bit helps!

Bourne Wood is a quiet ancient woodland with mixed conifers and semi-natural broadleaf trees.

Bird walk

The Spring Bird Walk on 25th March 2012 was a well supported event. An enthusiastic group of about 30 people gathered in the main car park at 9am on a fresh Sunday morning for this perfectly timed spring event. Previous bird walks had been later in the day and we anticipated seeing and hearing more species this year with the early start.

As expected, we were not disappointed. The range of species we encountered well represented birds in Bourne Woods at this time of year. They included; Goldfinch, Redpoll, Wood Pigeon, Jay, Nuthatch, Blue Tits, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Pheasant, Crows, Robins, Song Thrush and to the delight of us all, the Chiffchaff. Our guide, Vaughan Roberts, has a vast knowledge of bird song which he accurately mimicked for our benefit in identifying species.

It was a most enjoyable walk as we also saw the first of the primroses, violets and the new foliage on the willow and larch, heralding the arrival of spring.

The walk was about 2 miles long and lasted a leisurely hour and a half. Pictures of the event are here on the Friends of Bourne Wood website, and if you are interested in attending similar events, add the site to your 'favourites' to keep up to date with the event dates.

The wood is being gradually restored to native broadleaf woodland under the
'Ancient Woodland Project'.

The Flora of Bourne Wood

This list documents all vascular plant (flowering plants, ferns and horsetails)  recorded by local botanists from Bourne and Pillar Wood and has been compiled by Richard Jefferson. This is very much "work in progress" and the eventual intention is to produce a published flora of the wood.
